Tips for Planting Flowering Annuals

By Felix on November 19th, 2008

Planting flowering annuals is a quick and very effective way to add colour and brightness to your garden. Many experts on plants create hybrids and varieties of annuals in a rainbow of colours in different shades and hues, attractive flower forms, and with high resistance from diseases. If you want to know more tips about planting flowering annuals, here are some things you should take into consideration.

  • Soil should be moistened enough and well-drained. It should also have a good texture and structure. It should also have the ability to hold water well. A healthy soil is usually black in colour, not too sandy and not too clayey, and ‘wormy’. It should not be too loose and to compact, it should be fluffy with appropriate proportion between the spaces of the pores and the soil particles. To improve soil structure, what you can do is to add compost or other organic matters such as manure to the soil before you plant your flowering annuals.
  • A lot of annuals prefer good exposure to sunlight. However, there are few annuals such as pansies, violas, polyanthus, cinerarias, impatiens, honesty, primulas, foxgloves, coleus, and begonias which can tolerate shady areas. Tall and slender annuals should be protected from the wind to avoid damage or falling off.
  • Before planting, you can add a complete fertilizer to your soil. When the annual has been planted, regularly put soluble or liquid fertilizer to enhance growth and development of the plant. Annuals will grow well on a soil with a pH level of 6 or a little amount of acid. Higher levels of pH can only be tolerated by certain annuals such as sweet peas, gypsophilia, and dianthus.
  • It is very important to determine the planting time for annuals. If you plant them too early or too late, they will grow in an inappropriate time or season when the weather conditions are not ideal for them to develop well. Also, take into consideration the length of each day and changes of light when planting annuals.
  • People plant flowering annuals to add colour to their gardens. That is why it is very important to plan your colour scheme to make your garden look more attractive and interesting. You can choose flowers in the same colour shades or you can choose blooms with contrasting colours. It is all up to you. A helpful tip is to make sure what the colour of the flower is when the plant grows up to avoid any plants that are out of place in your garden.
  • Choose whether you want to use seeds or seedlings. There are not many differences between the two. Seeds are only cheaper and need more time to grow.
  • Some common pests for flowering plants are sap suckers and chewing insects. Examples of sap suckers are aphids and thrips. Not only do they directly damage your plant, they also carry with them micro organisms that cause diseases. To prevent these insects from inhabiting your annuals, you can spray water frequently or you can use insecticide. Some insecticides are not harmful to mammals and they only kill the target insects. On the other hand, chewing insects are caterpillars and earwigs. You can physically remove these creatures by hand.
  • To avoid fungal diseases, don’t water the leaves of susceptible plants because this condition is very ideal for fungal growth. If there is already an infection, use fungal spray.
