Tips For Planting Hardy Annuals | Flowering Garden Guide

Tips For Planting Hardy Annuals

By Felix on December 10th, 2008

Hardy annuals are plants that can grow all throughout one season and can tolerate cold temperatures. You can plant this kind of annual outside in your garden for them to generate seeds for planting the next year.

A few years ago, planting hardy annuals in gardens was out of vogue. However, a revival has been observed recently and this type of plant is once again important additions to gardens. If you want to follow the trend and you want to have hardy annuals in your garden, here are some tips that you should remember.

Annuals of this type can tolerate hottest conditions and poorest and driest soils. Some books even recommended these specific conditions. Annuals usually grow in situations when they only have a short time to grow and develop and to generate seeds. These extreme conditions make them mature fast and bloom elaborately but only for a short period of time.

In your garden, you do not want your annuals to develop and have flowers fast. You want them to stay in your garden and add attractiveness and colour for a long time. To make this possible, create conditions in your garden for your annuals that are better and ideal for them.

For instance, they will grow and bloom longer in conditions where they are exposed to sunlight and in well-drained soils with enough organic matter. You can improve the soil structure by loosening the soil a bit using a garden fork. Annuals are regularly thirsty so soils should be able to retain water well. Try to improve sandy and gravely soils by adding compost or manure.

This kind of annual also prefers to be starved a little. It is enough if you can incorporate balanced fertilizer in the soil before planting the annual.

Before planting your hardy annuals, make sure that you read the packet instructions carefully because some annuals require specific directions for planting (e.g. sowing depth and spacing). If you cannot find any instruction, use your knowledge or better yet, research about it to avoid mistakes. The seeds should be planted twice or three times deeper than what was recommended. Sow seeds thinly enough. Density of seeds in an area should not be too high to avoid competition. This is still dependent on the availability and viability of the seeds and the soil tilth quality.

You can cover the seeds by raking soil over the area where you sprinkled them and press gently using the flat portion of the rake. To avoid sparrows and other birds from taking dust baths in your newly sown-soil, place black cotton thread or a brushwood with twigs over the area with seeds.

Add support to your hardy annuals for them to develop better. You can use brushwood, bamboo canes, netting, dahlia stakes, or two pieces of plants with different height. For brushwood, you can use different types such as hazel, birch or other twiggy materials. Bamboo canes are good, but they do not look attractive in your gardens.
