Tips For Planting Perennials | Flowering Garden Guide

Tips For Planting Perennials

By Felix on December 5th, 2008

Perennials are good additions to your garden because they last longer than other plants. However, before you go out and load up your garden with these plants, you should know the basics of planting perennials so that you can get them off to a good start. Here are some helpful information and considerations for beginners like you.

  • Make a hole on the ground a little bigger than the diameter of your container and a little shallower. Don’t try to fit a plant into a very small hole because this can damage the roots.
  • Try to plant the young perennials one at a time. Don’t remove all of them from their containers at the same time. People are used to holding the plant by the stem, but this is not the proper way because stems are fragile. Instead, hold them by their roots.
  • Try to loosen the root ball if the roots are bundled together. Bundled roots usually inhibit growth.
  • After you remove the plant from the container, check if there are still a lot of soil from the container clinging to the roots. Shake off some of the soil so that the roots should be in contact with the soil in your garden which will help them establish a good root system.
  • Put the plant into the soil and loosely cover the roots with garden soil – fill the hole about half or 3/4 of the way, water them a bit, add more soil, press lightly, and water the plant again.
  • In planting perennials, the best option that you have for fertilizers is an organic fertilizer. Organic fertilizers enhance root growth and development of organisms in the soil that are beneficial to perennial plants.
  • For two months, maintain moistness of your perennial plants.
  • Planting perennials should be done on a cool and cloudy day, not hot and sunny because it is stressful for the plants and the gardener as well.
  • Make sure that the soil where you want to plant your perennial plants is a bit on the wet side. You can do this by watering the soil a day before the planting day or by planting your perennials after a slight shower or rain.
  • Before choosing a plant, think about your location. You should know if your plant can grow only in a certain place (e.g. sunny or shady, wet or dry soil, etc.).
  • It is best to plant most perennials at the beginning to the middle part of May, but some should be planted in the fall.
  • Plant a combination of small and big plants that look like a wave of trees when they grow rather than planting them from the tallest to the smallest tree like stairs. Wave-like group of trees look more natural than the stair-like trees.
  • Most perennials do not want their roots to get wet or soaked in water. It is very important to have good water drainage around the perennial.
  • Know the topography and landscape of your garden. Some gardens are sloping and some have tree stumps or tree rings for decoration. You should know this so that you can place your plant in an area where the roots can grow freely.
  • Remove dead or wilted flowers to prolong the flowering period.

These are the things you should think about when planting perennials. So now get out there and get planting!
