Watering Flowers | Flowering Garden Guide

Watering Flowers

By Felix on December 13th, 2008

Just like any other living thing, plants and flowers need enough water to survive, especially if the weather is hot. Watering flowers keeps them healthy and makes them bloom longer. But there is more to watering your plants properly than just spraying them with a hose. Here are some tips on the best way to water flowers:

Keep a close watch on the watering. Most people’s idea of watering flowers and plants is to turn on the sprinkler system and leave it with only the timer on. Aside from this being a waste of water, this is also not advisable for the plants since it can drown the roots of the plants and it can also kill the plant after some time. The best way to water flowers and plants is to water them only when you think they need to be watered. It is very easy to maintain plants because there are rains where they can get their water requirement. Using a timer is okay, but it is not the ideal way to water flowers. You can use timers if you are going on a vacation for a few days or weeks. This is better than nothing.

You should know the water requirement for your flowers and plants. Different kinds of flowers and plants have different specific water requirements. You have to adjust your watering schedules for each type of plants or flowers. You will not use the same water schedule or amount for a cactus and a lilac bush. Research in a library or interview an expert from a garden shop. The impact if you do not do this is not so great but it sure helps a lot in improving your flowers and plants.

Create good water drainage for your plants.

Regularly trim your plant. Trimming a plant means removing dead leaves or too much development of the leaves. This is related to watering flowers and plants since bigger plants require more water. Smaller plants which require less water are usually healthier than their untrimmed counterparts.

Always remember to water your indoor plants, especially in summer when temperature is high and inside your house is very hot. Sometimes, people tend to forget that their indoor plants are also live plants which need water. They only require less water than outdoor plants in your garden in usual days but if weather is very hot, they need water just like your plants outside. What you can do is to make a schedule for watering plants and flowers inside your house—and you should stick to it.

Many states experience drought in summer season. If you are living in this kind of state, what you can do is to use water from the rain. You can put out a bucket for catching rain water outside or you can install a water catching system in your garden. This can usually be bought from garden supply stores or you can also order online for convenience. These tricks are nice ways to save water while at the same time you will have a reservoir or emergency supply of water for watering flowers and plants in your garden.
